4. Rivers, deltas and lakes
Rivers transport water and sediment through drainage basins. Deltas commonly form where sediment accumulates near a river mouth, though not every river makes a delta.
High-yield facts
- A river's tributary joins a larger stream
- Watershed divides drainage basins
- Nile delta is in Egypt
- Indus River flows toward Arabian Sea

5. Deserts and arid regions
Deserts are defined principally by low precipitation, not simply by heat. Some are cold. Avoid assigning the Sahara or Gobi to only one country.
High-yield facts
- Sahara spans North Africa
- Gobi extends across Mongolia and China
- Atacama lies mainly in northern Chile
- Arid regions receive very low rainfall

6. Atmosphere and weather
Weather is short-term atmospheric condition; climate describes longer-term patterns. Study humidity, pressure, wind and precipitation along with the instruments measuring them.
High-yield facts
- Barometer measures atmospheric pressure
- Anemometer measures wind speed
- Hygrometer measures humidity
- Rain gauge measures precipitation

7. Water cycle and climate
The water cycle involves evaporation, condensation, precipitation, infiltration and runoff. Learn the role of solar energy and how changes in climate may alter patterns.
High-yield facts
- Evaporation changes liquid water to vapor
- Condensation forms liquid droplets
- Transpiration releases water from plants
- Runoff moves water over land

8. Plate tectonics and volcanoes
Earth's lithosphere consists of moving plates. Plate boundaries contribute to mountain formation, earthquakes and volcanic activity. Hazards are influenced by local geology and building conditions.
